The author wishes to thank many people who have helped him through the years to know the creatures of the wilds. My father took me walking in the woods and when I grew up, put a gun and camera in my hands. His training was the beginning of an insight into the wild birds and animals, their habitat and their relationships with man.

Guides, outfitters, shooters, naturalists and authors of countless books helped in the early years of education.

I am also greatly indebted to Francis W. Davis, of Roscoe, N. Y, the illustrator of this book and its companion, The Young Sportsman's Guide To Game Animals.

Thanks too for the use in this book of certain material which has appeared in sportsman's magazines written over the years by the author.

Lowell Pratt and Angus Cameron have been of most inspiring help in my writing experience.

Lastly I appreciate the time made available to me to go afield by the New York World-Telegram and Sun while preparing my daily column "Hooks And Bullets."
